Bronze Patination and Patinas

A Patina is a colored effect on a bronze surface, which is achieved either by the application of chemicals or natural oxidisation when exposed to the elements over a long period of time.

Different chemical compounds applied to the surface of the metal will give different resultant effects on the metal. For example applying Potassium Poly Sulfide to a bronze surface will give the metal a black coloring. There are a variety of chemicals and techniques that can be used to create a whole plethora of colors and finishes, some of which can be seen here.

Patinations can be organic in nature and may take weeks to settle. Some patinations will fade, darken or even completely discolor if not treated correctly, so Butterfly Bronze would recommend restoring the patina every few years. With the correct care and attention sculptures and their coloring will last the test of time.
